Google Assistant comes pre-installed on all Android phones and is helpful in various ways, but if you don’t use it often, you can disable it on your device. I’ll show you exactly how to do that.
Why You Should Turn Off Google Assistant
Google Assistant is a valuable feature, but not everyone finds it amusing. There could be several reasons for this. For one, if you prefer doing things manually, there’s no point keeping Google Assistant turned on as it’ll drain battery life and hog your phone’s processing power.
There’s also a matter of privacy for people who feel uneasy knowing that Google is always listening to you. If you’re one of those people, it’s best to turn Google Assistant off for your peace of mind. As a result, this will also help in stopping your phone from tracking you.
How to Turn Off Google Assistant on Android
First, let’s see how to delete your saved voice match profile on Google Assistant and then how to turn it off entirely. Here’s how to do this:
- Open the Google app and tap on your profile picture.
- Tap Settings > Google Assistant > Hey Google & Voice Match.
- Here, toggle off Hey Google, then tap Delete Voice Match model and tap Remove on the pop-up to confirm.
How to Turn Off Gemini on Android
If you can’t find the option to disable Google Assistant, it’s likely because you switched to Gemini, Google’s new AI digital assistant, at some point. In that case, you first have to switch back from Gemini to Google Assistant and then disable the latter, as we discussed above.
To switch from Gemini to Google Assistant:
- Open the Google app and tap on your profile picture.
- Tap Settings > Gemini > Digital assistants from Google.
- Here, select Google Assistant and tap Switch on the pop-up to confirm.
The next time you want to use Google Assistant or Gemini, you can launch it by long-pressing the home button or swiping diagonally from the bottom corner of your screen. You’ll then be prompted to re-enable it before you can use it.
Whether it’s out of concern for your privacy or you simply don’t use the feature, Google Assistant is not for everyone. If you belong to either of those camps, it’s best to disable Google’s digital assistant altogether.
However, do note that you can’t fully delete Google Assistant because to do that, you’ll have to uninstall the Google app, which is neither possible nor recommended since the app is such an integral part of Android. At best, you can disable it like we did here.
