In this guide, we will show you how to transfer Samsung Messages to Google Messages. No doubt the former is a pretty decent messaging app. Baked into every Samsung device, it does its job pretty well. But for some, the offering from the Silicon Valley giants is their go-to messaging app. Some have got used to the Google ecosystem and hence are aware of all the features and settings of its messaging app. Hence they don’t wish to walk in completely unchartered territory.
Furthermore, if you are coming from another Android device, then just a Google sign-in is what is needed to get back all your messages onto the new devices. So this “cross-device compatibility” is another reason why people prefer to choose Google over Samsung’s very own app for the same purpose. And in this guide, we will help you achieve just that. Here is how you could transfer Samsung Messages to Google Messages. Follow the given steps.
How to Transfer Samsung Messages to Google Messages
In this tutorial, we will have a look at three different scenarios. In the first case, we will show you how to transfer messages from Samsung Messages to the Google Messages app on your Samsung device. Then in the next section, we will list out the transfer steps from the Samsung Messages app on your Samsung device to Google Messages app installed on a non-Samsung device. Finally, in the third case, we will check out the transfer steps between two different Samsung devices.
CASE 1: Transferring within the same Samsung Device
- On your Samsung device, head over to the Play Store and download the Google Messages app.[googleplay url=”https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.messaging&hl=en_IN”]
- Launch the app and you should see the option to Set as Default Chat app, tap on it. The import process will now begin and shall take a couple of minutes. It will depend on the number of messages as well as your network speed.
- If for some reason you don’t see the Set as Default Chat app option, then you will have to manually make it the default messaging app.
- For that, head over to Settings on your Samsung device.
- Then go to the Apps page and tap on the overflow icon situated at the top-right.
- Select the Default apps option and tap on SMS apps.
- Make a switch to the Google Messages app from the Samsung Messages. Do keep in mind that the name for both these apps will be the same, you will have to distinguish then from their respective icons.
- Once that is done, launch the Google Messages app and wait for the import to finish.
So these were the steps to transfer Samsung Messages to Google Messages within the Samsung ecosystem. If you wish to transfer from a Samsung to a non-Samsung device, then the below section will come in handy.
CASE 2: Transferring Messages from a Samsung Device to a Non-Samsung device
In this section, we will be using a third-party app to create a backup of all your SMS from the Samsung messages app on your Samsung device. Then we will install the same app onto a non-Samsung device and then import that back up to this device. The below steps should make it easier to understand:
- Download and install the SMS Backup & Restore app on your Samsung device. There are a plethora of other apps that come with this functionality. You could try them out as well.[googleplay url=”https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&hl=en_IN”]
- Also, make sure that this device has Google Messages installed, otherwise, do so right away,
- Anyways, once installed, give it all the necessary permissions. Next up, tap on the hamburger menu situated at the top-left.
- Select the Back up now option. Give this back up a name. You may disable the Call Logs toggle as we don’t need a back up for the latter.
- From the backup location, you could select any of your preferred options. For this tutorial, we are going ahead with the Google Drive option.
- Then it might ask for the Schedule backup. Since this is a one-time process, you may disable this toggle as of now. Finally, hit the back up now button present at the bottom right.
- Head over to your non-Samsung device and install the SMS Backup & Restore app (or any other app that you have chosen for this purpose).
- Launch the app and tap on the hamburger menu situated at the top left of your screen.
- Then select the Restore option and chose the location where you have saved your backup. In this guide, we will be going ahead with the Google Drive Location option.
- Log in to your Google Drive account and then import your messages from there. The duration for the process to complete will vary, depending on your internet speed and the number of messages being restored.
Now open the Google Messages app on your non-Samsung device and that’s it. The transfer of Samsung Messages to Google Messages is now complete within a Samsung and a non-Samsung device. Now here is another scenario that some of our readers might be interested in.
CASE 3: Transferring Messages between two Samsung Devices
This section will come in handy if you are looking to transfer messages between two Samsung devices. The steps given in ‘CASE 2’ could be used if you wish to transfer messages from an old Samsung device to a new Samsung device. Just keep in mind that you have the Google Messages and the SMS Backup & Restore app installed on your newer Samsung device. And once the messages have been imported over to the new device, make Google Messages the default messaging app using the steps discussed above.
